ANAÏS DUPLAN

INFORMATION

IN HIS FOURTH BOOK, Anaïs Duplan reinvents ekphrasis as an act of devotion to art as both the sense-archive and future tense of Black embodiment. In this vibrant thinkspace (where thinking is singing), Duplan hosts a vivid community of Black musicians, performers, painters, photographers, poets, critics, filmmakers and video artists, even a chorus of lovelorn chatroom denizens. I Need Music hosts the lyric re-arrivals of unquiet pasts, enacts a haptic intimacy with the present, and vibrates with the immanence of Black, queer futures.

THIS COMPANION SITE houses the notes, acknowledgments, responses, miscellany, etc. that made I NEED MUSIC possible.

[I talk a lot about empathic capability in a class I’m teaching]

How did chaos become a binary? It feels very this or that. Like if we stay very still maybe it’ll stop spinning into that. That, unknown unbelievable depth of chaos. A spinning spinning spinning of passing days is already chaos. I do think it could get worse and I honestly don't know if I could make it through more of this, our present chaos or that unknown chaos. The spectrum of chaos is a scary prompt to consider. When you don't know what could happen the possibilities are endless and anxiety inducing. Causing us to continue choosing the chaotic known. Similar to the sitcom troupe, when a character buys new goldfish to replace one that died rather than divulging the cycle of life to a youth or to a friend. More goldfish, rather than discomfort, pain or any other plot line. They are always found out and forgiven, becoming a parable of honesty and friendship.

This plot line would be the perfect place for chaos. For something insane to occur, beyond mass entertainment value and character development. For the dead fish to return in the body of the main character’s lover who's also the writer who’s a known magician who lives in the basement of an oil rig who is an amatuer boxer who has an upcoming local match and during his weigh-in the two face each other and for that split second they're looking at each other in the face with determination to fight but then they kiss and then its a porn video you’re watching before work that you must watch to get yourself to go to work and then maybe something post-apocalyptic.

There is no avoidance of chaos. There is only an avoidance of maneuvering the chaos, it could be a generative force. Not in a weaponized way, but in a change of situation. The spectrum of chaos has many planes, directions and time travel.
